What it is about life or our place in it that makes us feel restless, discontent or unsatisfied? Not that we feel this way all of the time, but if we let ourselves stop for a second and really reflect, typically there is something that is not as it should be. It is so easy for us to put aside (or not even remember) all of the great things we are doing, and instead focus on those things that are less than optimal.
Perhaps its our relationships. Perhaps our weight, spiritual walk or our home’s organization (or lack of as mine is right now!) Whatever it happens to be, be aware that focusing on our shortcomings can be a slippery slope. On one hand, it is good to be aware of the things we need to change. On the other hand, we must be aware of our current life circumstances, commitments and overall responsibilities.
I’ve heard it said, from financial counselor Dave Ramsey and many others, that if you want to focus and go after something, such as run a marathon or lose 10 pounds, you must give up other things. There is simply not enough time in our days to do everything we want to do. I’m the world’s worst at attempting to stuff in 100+ things in my day, only to feel like a complete loser by the end of it because my expectations were so high!
Give yourself permission to accept yourself, embracing the present. Your life, your results are a reflection of yourself and the choices you have made. Whether good or bad, we are where we are right now. Some things we are happy with, some things we are not.
So, applaud yourself first for those things you are doing, whether it be staying home with your kids, keeping up with laundry, or having a great relationship with your spouse. Then, and only then, focus on those things you want to change. Need help developing a plan to successfully knock out some goals? Check out this article from over at Dumb Little Man’s Blog.
We can only change by loving and respecting ourselves in this moment, believing we have what it takes to keep moving forward.
Do you struggle with embracing yourself and your current circumstances?
